GTA 6 Online Faces Many Challenges Ahead!

Story Highlight
  • A former Valve developer says GTA 6’s online mode could struggle to pull players away from GTA Online.
  • He argues that teams have previously tried to flip a simple switch and kill off previous games, but this doesn’t always work.
  • Rockstar Games will need a careful transition plan to ease players into GTA 6 Online.

GTA 6 is shaping up to be the industry’s most impressive game to date, and it will certainly be met with a huge audience on day one.

Rockstar Games already has an incredible following after the somewhat unexpected success of GTA Online, leading to unprecedented excitement for GTA 6. However, one former Valve developer warns that the team might find itself in a pickle due to GTA Online’s success.

Why it matters: Few games have been around for as long as GTA Online, which has been supported for over a decade now.

Ahead of its release, GTA 6 Online could be in jeopardy, particularly due to how popular GTA 5’s online component already is. As per former Valve developer Chet Faliszek, GTA 6 Online may struggle to move players away from the current GTA Online ecosystem.

The ex-developer argues that teams have previously tried to completely shut down one game to move players over to another, with this approach not being the most successful.

He also questions what GTA 6 will bring to the table that GTA 5 isn’t already doing as a way to incentivize players to move over to the new online component.

It’s really hard to move people off. What is GTA 6 is going to bring us that GTA 5 doesn’t have?

Chet Faliszek says that GTA Online is already making billions, so Rockstar Games likely has even loftier ambitions for its successor. However, the team risks alienating some players in the process.

GTA 6 Launches In November

Although GTA 6 Online will likely be a smash hit immediately, Chet Faliszek does raise an important point. Millions of players have invested a lot of time into GTA Online, so it will be interesting to see just how Rockstar Games convinces this audience to leave all that progress behind.

What do you think the team should do to convince players to move on from GTA Online? Let us know in the comments below.
