Ever since the wildly divisive ending to The Last of Us Part 2, fans have been clamoring for another game in the series. However, Naughty Dog hasn’t been able to capitalise on the IP’s success so far, failing to develop a spin-off or sequel.
For sure, fans have had multiple remakes and a TV Show to consume, but fresh content like the multiplayer title has either been scrapped or not been announced. But this might change soon, as Naughty Dog has outlined an exciting future for the franchise.
Why it matters: After the success of the HBO show, The Last of Us is one of the most important IPs under Sony’s care, and it’s high time the Japanese giant starts utilising it.
While talking to The Washington Post, Naughty Dog head Neil Druckmann revealed that the studio has multiple The Last of Us projects in development. In the interview, the lead creative emphasized that Naughty Dog isn’t done with the franchise just yet, and he is excited to talk about new projects, but only when the time is right.
We’re not done with The Last of Us. There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.
Druckmann also reiterated that the studio is the owner of The Last of Us, and despite having no involvement in the creative direction of the HBO adaptation’s upcoming season, Naughty Dog has other plans for the IP.
Considering how the studio canned the multiplayer project after spending hundreds of millions and almost finishing the game, it is high time Naughty Dog releases a Last of Us title to appease fans.
Joel’s voice actor, Troy Baker, teased previously that a potential Last of Us 3 would be a very different game from what fans are expecting. Hence, the few stops remaining on Neil Druckmann’s adventure in the post-apocalyptic world are certainly going to create as much discourse as the second game.
