- Analyst says he talked to devs and publishers about Sony’s disc cancellation, and they are upset.
- There is resentment towards Sony, as they still saw a lot of value in physical media.
- Fans are even more pissed at them following Xbox’s new digital-to-disc program.
It’s been exactly 2 months since Sony announced it’s getting rid of discs from 2028, in favor of an all-digital future. Since then, there’s been a massive uproar, petitions, and a lot of backlash, but the company seems adamant about the decision.
Analysts claim that many developers and publishers are viewing Sony negatively, and there’s sort of a resentment towards them following the disc cancellation. This comes especially after Xbox’s new disc-to-digital program.
Why it matters: While most huge publishers and studios might not care about physical media, there are certain who want to keep the spirit alive. This includes smaller studios and even bigger ones like CD Projekt Red.
In the latest episode of DF Weekly, they talked about Xbox’s new program and how Sony doesn’t have the best reputation at the moment. Fans are praising Xbox for digital ownership, while Sony is in hot water.
I spoke to a lot of devs and publishers, and they were largely very upset. There seems to be a lot of resentment for what Sony has done, and what they are doing.

Fans are visibly not happy with the disc cancellation, but even studios and publishers are now holding resentment towards the company. While physical sales are in decline, there is still a massive market for them.
We’ve seen from previous data from titles like Resident Evil Requiem and AC Shadows that around 50% of the sales in various regions are still physical. The trend isn’t the same in the US, but for many countries, discs are relevant.
