AMD and Intel are facing a rough stretch in the desktop CPU market, with new retail data pointing to a major slowdown in processor sales. According to a new report, both companies have seen desktop CPU sales fall sharply.
Why it matters: The rising prices for PC components like graphics cards, SSDs, and RAM have meant that desktop CPUs for gaming are not in high demand at the moment. Even CPUs have seen price hikes in certain cases.
According to analysis firm Mercury Research, X86 desktop CPU shipments have declined for the second time in a row. Last quarter, this part of the market saw a more than 20% decline YOY, with both Intel and AMD suffering.
It is said that Intel had it worse than AMD in this regard, with the Ryzen lineup declining at a slower rate than Intel’s chips. On the other hand, mobile and server-grade CPUs appear to be doing quite well.
In fact, this segment of the market is doing well enough to make up for the decline in desktop CPU demand. Ultimately, both X86 and ARM CPUs saw a combined growth of more than 10% last quarter.

The fact that most PC gamers don’t have much of a reason to buy new builds or upgrade has led to less demand for CPUs.
The data also reflects that demand for desktop CPUs from OEM builders has taken a hit, since pre-built gaming PC sales are also suffering due to everything else becoming more expensive.
