Ubisoft is going through a tough phase, downsizing by laying off hundreds of developers, closing studios, and cancelling projects. Therefore, every title needs to be a success moving forward to help the company recover.
It had a good start with Black Flag Resynced this year. Unfortunately, the company’s next game has already launched to mixed reviews and a terrible reception on Steam.
The Division Resurgence, which originally came out on Android and iOS earlier this year, launched on Steam to a limited audience that is very critical of it.
Why it matters: Ubisoft finally launched a new Division game on PC after 7 years, so many gamers had huge expectations for it. However, the mobile project has just turned out to be another slop entry chock-full of microtransactions and gameplay issues.
Set in New York like the first game, The Division Resurgence is a third-person shooter that has you fight across locations like Liberty Island and the New York Stock Exchange as a member of the Strategic Homeland Division.
You’re rewarded with different loot as you progress through the looter-shooter. Unfortunately, the game is plagued with technical and gameplay issues, such as login woes, mouse bugs, tedious progression, glitches, and underwhelming rewards.
The microtransactions in the game are so awful and overwhelming that a reviewer called Korean gacha titles a better alternative than this Division spin-off.
The convoluted menu design also forces you to micromanage it, which saps any remaining fun from gameplay. Additionally, the gameplay quality is also quite low compared to past Division titles since this one was developed with the mobile platform in mind.
Therefore, it’s been dubbed a free-to-play mobile slop experience through and through.
The game also failed to pull a big enough audience on Steam, which suggests that it won’t have a lasting future on the PC platform unless Ubisoft quickly resolves the bugs and improves microtransactions.
