PlayStation continues making small steps towards its eventual exit from the physical disc market. After adding a label confirming this decision on the PS5 Disc Edition packaging, the gaming giant has added a similar notice to its website.
The official PlayStation Direct Store now contains a similar message, informing new PS5 Disc Edition buyers of the decision.
Why it matters: Sony is adamant that digital-only is the future, but many hardcore gaming enthusiasts are still not happy about the loss of physical games altogether.
Sony’s official PlayStation Direct Store sells all consoles, accessories, and games, giving consumers one place to find everything PlayStation in different countries.
Attempting to buy a PS5 Disc Edition console on this website, however, now comes with a disclaimer. Sony informs customers that it will no longer support discs starting from January 2028.
Moreover, the message notes that games released before January 2028 will continue to support the disc format. The same message has also been added to the Disc Drive add-on page for PS5 consoles.
From Jan 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase in digital format only.
With PlayStation previously saying it would cautiously move forward with this decision, these notices showing up at various places appear to be Sony doing just that. The gaming giant is gradually informing the masses of the decision to move away from discs, with more drastic steps expected closer to January, 2028.
As such, it will be interesting to see whether these small steps further accelerate the shift towards digital gaming. Most revenue in the industry already comes from digital distribution today, so these messages could serve to further persuade buyers towards digital consoles and games.
