With memory shortages on the rise, many companies are now turning to desperate measures. The likes of Microsoft are optimizing Windows for 8GB of memory again, while AMD has brought back graphics cards with just 4GB of VRAM.
Amid the chaos, Samsung has come forward with another grave statement. The tech giant states that global memory shortages aren’t going away anytime soon.
Why it matters: Increased DRAM prices have impacted practically all areas of mainstream technology, with things expected to become even worse in the near future.
In its latest earnings call, Samsung warned that the global memory shortage is not close to ending, with pressure expected to continue through 2027 as demand for AI keeps rising.
Samsung also said the memory crunch could last through 2028, while its profit rose 19x amid stronger pricing and heavy demand. Despite the heavy profits, the company admitted that global supply won’t increase in the near future despite ongoing efforts in this regard.
Samsung believes, therefore, that shortages will become “even more severe” by next year, likely persisting through 2028. This means that the mainstream tech market might not show any signs of recovery before 2029.
We believe it will be unlikely to see any increase in incremental supply through 2028. The supply constraints are expected to become even more severe in 2027.
