Are Open-Worlds Too Old At This Point?

Story Highlight
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi believes players may be growing tired of open-world games.
  • His comments point to formula fatigue rather than the complete decline of the genre.
  • Future open-world releases may need stronger identities, denser activities, and fewer repetitive objectives

Open-world games remain a major part of the release calendar, but years of bloated maps and repetitive activities have created growing concerns about genre fatigue. In fact, Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has now added to that discussion.

Despite the success of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the director admits that players are tired of open-word games.

Why it matters: Open-world development is expensive and time-consuming. Despite its drawbacks, most developers seem to find the genre appealing one way or the other.

Speaking to Eurogamer, the developer suggested that players are becoming tired of conventional open-world experiences and increasingly want games that bring something new to the format.

He discussed the modern approach to open-worlds, with games setting players loose in a vast map. Naoki Hamaguchi believes that these types of experiences can very impactful to players at the end of the day.

At the same time, the developer understands the importance of steering away from repetition and other tropes that have persisted across the genre for a while.

The idea of open-world fatigue is a very important concept to me.

Of course, this statement is relevant since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth moved in the open-world direction and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is expected to feature an even bigger world. The finale of the latest Final Fantasy 7 trilogy launches later next year, so it will be interesting to see its world fares against other mainstream titles in the same genre.

Do you agree that players are becoming tired of open-world games, or is repetitive content the real problem?
