According to a new report, Sony’s disc-related decisions could shrink a global second-hand games market worth more than $7 billion.

Why it matters: Second-hand sales give players cheaper access to games while allowing physical owners to recover part of their spending. A reduced resale market would place more pricing control in Sony and its publisher partners’ hands.

As per CNBC’s report, the used games market won’t disappear overnight following PlayStation’s exit. Analysts note that Nintendo Switch games and retro titles will continue to be in circulation, but PlayStation’s decision will leave a gradual impact.

It is said that the lack of new games circulating in the market will lead to a slow decline and eventual death of used games. This market is reportedly worth over $7 billion today and may reach as high as $13.8 billion in value by 2034

However, with the PS6 generation expected to leave disc games behind, the market may rapidly lose momentum afterwards. As popular analyst Michael Pachter points out, used games also help audiences pay for new games, making them an important part of the industry.

Analysts quoted in the report completely disagree with PlayStation’s decision, calling it an anti-consumer approach.
