- Nier Automata director Yoko Taro has reacted to PlayStation’s plans to end physical game disc production in 2028.
- The developer said that the loss of physical media saddened him.
- Yoko Taro has joined developers like Hideo Kojima in expressing sadness following this decision.
PlayStation’s decision to discontinue physical game production has already sparked major concerns around preservation and consumer choice. While digital sales have increasingly dominated the console market, many players and developers still view discs as essential to long-term access.
Nier Automata creator Yoko Taro has now joined that discussion. Alongside the likes of Hideo Kojima, the veteran developer expressed disappointment over PlayStation’s plans.
Why it matters: Physical releases give players more control over ownership, resale, lending, and preservation. A fully digital ecosystem instead places access in the hands of platform holders.

Yoko Taro recently took to Twitter and discussed his thoughts on the situation. He thought Sony’s history with formats such as music CDs meant the company would remain committed to physical products until the end. However, the PlayStation decision appears to have changed that expectation.
The Nier Automata director still acknowledged the broader market shift, admitting that this is just the way things are going. However, it’s clear that the developer would have rather Sony continued to support discs.
I’m saddened by the loss of physical media, not just for games, but for the future.
The reaction comes after reports even suggested that PlayStation cancelled physical discs without first consulting some partners and publishers.

Yoko Taro’s response is not to be taken lightly because Nier Automata built a dedicated audience across physical and digital releases. The game also appeals to hardcore audiences, who are generally more likely to appreciate physical games over digital media.
Anyhow, PlayStation’s decision seems set in stone, with the gaming giant showing no signs of turning back anytime soon.
Would the end of PlayStation physical games change how you buy or collect games?
