Slowly but surely, AI tools are becoming an integral part of the gaming industry. With major companies like Ubisoft co-opting the technology, industry veterans have warned fans that fully AI-generated games will start hitting the market sooner rather than later.

Arguably, the most prominent company that has come out in support of AI is Sony, with the Japanese giant insisting on multiple occasions that the technology will help unleash the true creativity of PlayStation. Now, in new documents, Sony has once again emphasized its trust in AI.

Why it matters: With one of the most recognisable names in the gaming world supporting AI so bluntly, the future isn’t looking too bright.

In a Q&A session for its Game and Network service segment, Sony CEO Hideaki Nishino revealed that AI is an exciting long-term opportunity for the company. The President explained that the technology is very important to Sony and is the foundation of its future strategy.

With our global player base, deep library of IP, and integrated ecosystem, AI is an exciting long-term opportunity for us.

Nishino went on to say that AI is already helping the company across several segments. The technology is improving game developers’ efficiency, enhancing the player experience, and helping consumers discover content they like, while enabling creators to produce higher-quality content on their own.

The CEO further stated that Sony is very excited about the prospect of AI and will share more in the near future. This isn’t the first time the Japanese giant has publicly outlined the importance of AI, previously revealing that every PlayStation studio is currently utilising the technology in development.

The company previously announced that all PlayStation studios are employing AI.

Guerrilla Games even used the company’s new AI animation tool to help remaster Horizon Zero Dawn, underscoring how the technology is taking deep root at Sony. With recent research revealing that AI use in video games reduces sales by up to 60%, it will be interesting to see how Sony’s doubling down on the technology affects its future game sales.
