State of Decay 3 is undoubtedly one of Xbox’s most anticipated upcoming entries, as it has survived several periods of turmoil within the brand. The game has been in active development under a secret player council and a team 6 times larger than the original game’s.
Promising details have now come out from a preview that reassure fans about the game’s future. State of Decay 3 features a map roughly four times bigger than the last entry, and there’s seamless 4-player co-op that is not held back by peer-to-peer limitations.
Why it matters: State of Decay 3 has been in development for many years, with multiple internal delays. Therefore, fans expect the game to surpass all expectations and improve the intense zombie experience its predecessor was known for.
YouTuber Brian Menard sat down with Undead Labs to play State of Decay 3 and reveals exciting new details from his preview experience. It is a huge leap forward in terms of the multiplayer experience, with the new server architecture removing the restrictive tether system.
The title features seamless 4-player co-op, so the players can split tasks across the map and do anything independently. And the progress continues even if some players log off.
State of Decay 3 also lets you take care of up to 3 bases at the same time per community and lets players build communities of up to 36 survivors now (12 per base).
Therefore, it’s a full overhaul of the multiplayer experience that solves some of the biggest issues from the last entry. It is designed to feel expansive and persistent for long-term survival. Meanwhile, the entry has also been developed with single-player in mind.

The game also features dynamic zombie threats, including blood plague and evolving infestations. There’s better base building, resource & horde management, crafting, and survival progression. Also expect to see improved systems for plague hearts, nests, and community management.
It’s also worth noting that State of Decay 3 is still in early alpha, with missing animations, textures, and bugs. However, Undead Labs is reportedly aiming for a 2027 launch window for the zombie experience.
