Story Highlight
  • PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino hinted at the rumored PS6 handheld in a new interview.
  • Nishino said the company needs to utilise technology that makes the console experience available at multiple locations.
  • The President also stated that PlayStation needs to adapt to the changing lifestyles of consumers.

With current-gen hardware in its final stretch, there are a myriad of questions surrounding the next iteration of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. For now, industry experts and players alike are worried about the pricing of upcoming hardware, with analysts predicting that next-gen consoles could exceed $1,000 due to the memory crisis.

Information from official sources has been scarce so far, but multiple insiders have confirmed one thing: The upcoming PS6 handheld. Now, in a new interview, PlayStation’s CEO has also hinted at the existence of this device.

Why it matters: Releasing a portable option alongside a home console doesn’t feel like a bad idea, considering the success of Nintendo Switch 2 and the price hike next-gen hardware will be hit with.

PS6 Handheld
The portable console will reportedly have a better GPU than the Xbox Series S.

While talking to Famitsu, PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino officially teased the rumored PS6 handheld, saying that the company can create something interesting by developing a console that is accessible in multiple locations.

As I mentioned earlier, how to meet changing lifestyle needs is a profound challenge. In the future, I think we can create something interesting by utilizing technologies that can be used in various forms and locations to develop new game console experiences.

The PlayStation president explained that the lifestyle of people around the globe is changing, and meeting these emerging demands is a profound challenge for Sony. According to Nishino, the gaming giant makes hardware so people can turn it on and play anytime they want to.

Hence, looking at this perspective, PlayStation needs to make a gaming console experience that is available on the go, fitting the needs of the modern consumer. The CEO acknowledged that the brand is associated with living room gaming, but he still plans to release devices like the PlayStation Portal that make video games playable in other locations.

PS6 Portable
Developers have already been informed about the PS6 handheld.

According to reports, Sony has already told developers to prepare for a new handheld alongside the PS6. Hence, the portable console is well-known in the gaming world, with reports even revealing that the device will be 3 times faster compared to Nintendo Switch 2.

Do you think releasing a handheld alongside the PS6 is a good decision? Should Sony just stick to home consoles? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
