- SIE has once again stated that it is sticking with live service games in the future.
- The president says they help reach a global audience, and the genre is still fresh.
- This comes after some major live service failures, including Concord, Marathon, and more.
Launching a live service genre is quite a risky thing these days. Most people are done with them as the genre has become quite saturated, and with regular new releases, no new title offers anything revolutionary or groundbreaking.
PlayStation has been one of the biggest victims of this, as some of its projects, like Marathon, Concord, and more, have been huge letdowns. However, the company says it’s still committed to the genre despite the failures.
Why it matters: Many thought that they might have learned at this point that live service isn’t the right way forward. Innovative single-player games are what fans really want, so focusing on live service could be catastrophic.
In an interview with Famitsu, SIE President Hideaki Nishino was asked about the future of live service games at PlayStation after the undesirable results from Marathon, Concord, and even the now-shut-down Destiny 2.
Nishino said he believes live service games are a way to capture a global audience, so they will be focusing on them no matter what. He said the genre is still relatively fresh and they want to further experiment with it.
We believe that live service games are content that attracts users on a global level, so we want to continue to revitalize the market through both first-party and third-party content,

Additionally, live service will be the key to additional revenue. Of course, moving forward, single-player games will be strictly PlayStation exclusives, so the multiplayer ones can help reach audiences on other platforms.
However, we have learned the hard way that succeeding in the genre isn’t easy. Sony found great success with Helldivers 2, but Concord led to the closure of an entire studio, and Marathon and Destiny have cost Bungie half its staff.
