With over 90 million users, PlayStation’s scale is starting to speak for itself!

Story Highlight
  • GTA 6 pre-orders are selling 6 times faster on PS5 compared to Xbox.
  • It is also the best-selling entry on Amazon at the time of writing.
  • The game’s pre-orders are selling out despite coming with only a one-time use code.

Gamers have been desperate for GTA 6 for years, so its pre-orders began selling like hotcakes on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as soon as the campaign went live. The game’s demand is so high it even threatens to spark a console shortage in the holiday season.

New data now shows there is a huge disparity between both consoles in pre-order sales, as they are deeply skewed towards the PS5 platform. According to a new report, GTA 6 pre-orders are selling 6 times faster on PS5 when compared to Xbox.

Why it matters: PS5 has nearly triple the number of active users compared to Xbox, but Sony’s intense marketing push for GTA 6 is also driving a pre-order surge for the console. Meanwhile, Xbox might have failed to market the game at all.

GTA 6 is also the best-selling video game on Amazon in both the PS and Xbox categories.
GTA 6 is also the best-selling video game on Amazon in both the PS and Xbox categories.

This report comes via IGN Finds, whose internal sources clarify that GTA 6 pre-orders on PS5 are currently outselling Xbox by nearly a 6:1 ratio. The game is rolling over in huge amounts on Amazon, becoming the top-selling title on both platforms at the time of writing.

Regardless, this disparity is driven by multiple factors, such as PlayStation’s larger install base, which hovers over 90 million compared to Xbox’s roughly 35 million figure.

Another huge push to the ratio is Sony and Rockstar’s collaboration to market GTA 6, with a custom startup animation on PS5 that has never been seen before.

GTA 6 Physical
GTA 6 physical copies don’t even include discs, yet they are still selling like hotcakes.

Rockstar even called PS5 the best place to play the game. The open-world takes full advantage of unique PS5 features, gaining near-instant loading times, seamless integration with DualSense, and more.

In comparison, Xbox has failed to market GTA 6 on its platform and missed out on a huge opportunity to sell its consoles and pre-orders.

On a side note, a notable insider suggested that the GTA 6 physical edition with discs will arrive later in December, which might bring another wave of game sales on both consoles.
