The Game Abandoning PS5 Could Do More Harm Than Good!

Story Highlight
  • Gears of War: E-Day was an expensive project for Xbox, reportedly costing over $400 million.
  • Insider argues that even a PS5 launch might not have recouped its budget.
  • Xbox abandoning a PS5 port could do more harm than good for the prequel.

Xbox is making drastic moves under its new boss to secure its future. The biggest change yet has been the brand’s return to exclusives for its tentpole IPs, with Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution now only aiming for an Xbox launch.

Previous corroborated rumors revealed that a PS5 port for the new Gears prequel was cancelled at the last minute.

A credible insider claims that the game has cost Xbox upwards of $400 million, which means it’ll be even harder for it to recoup its budget with an exclusive release.

Why it matters: Gears of War: E-Day has reportedly cost Xbox so much that ditching a PS5 launch might have doomed the project’s success entirely. So, even a positive reception and the expected sales figure might not be enough for the prequel’s success.

In a new Insider Gaming weekly podcast, insider Tom Henderson argues that Gears of War: E-Day would have struggled a lot to recoup its huge budget even with a PS5 launch, so Xbox going for an exclusive approach will make things even harder for it moving forward.

Gears of War’s budget is insane, like i’ve heard upwards of 400 million dollars. […] And let’s be honest it probably wasn’t going to make money even if it was on PlayStation, But Now it’s Definitely Not Going [to].

Tom argues that not many gamers will buy an Xbox or Game Pass subscription just to play the Gears prequel. And since Xbox Series stocks are lacking, there are not enough consoles to buy for Gears fans to recoup costs in the first place.

Gears of War E-Day
Gears of War: E-Day has a very tough road ahead.

He adds that Xbox should have stuck to a multiplatform approach until Project Helix’s launch instead of catering to a few hardcore fans. This would have allowed PlayStation users to realize what Xbox has to offer, making Helix all the more appealing to them.
