ASUS’ $50 “Burn-Proof” ROG Equalizer GPU Cable Reportedly Burned

Expert Verified By

ASUS ROG developed a specialized power cable to prevent burning issues. Yeah, it burned.

Story Highlight

  • The new ASUS ROG Equalizer cable has been spotted with burned connectors.
  • This puts into question the reliability of the cable designed specifically to be “burn-proof.”
  • The cause of the issue has not yet been determined.

In a hilarious turn of events, ASUS’s ROG Equalizer power cables have reportedly been spotted with burned connectors, despite the cable being developed specifically to prevent said issue. UNIKO’s Hardware on X shared a sighting on Chiphell showing a user holding a ROG Equalizer cable with multiple burned connectors.

The cable in the picture is unmistakably the ROG Equalizer, as it can be identified through its unique purple connectors and ROG-themed combs. At least three connectors can be seen completely burned, which will render the cable useless in all likelihood. It must be noted that this is not the first instance of burned power connectors. We have previously reported multiple instances of the 12V-2×6 cable burning, including one with the RTX 5090

ASUS recently introduced the ROG Equalizer GPU power cables for premium graphics cards that tend to draw a lot of power. The company developed specialized 12V-2×6 PCIe connectors specifically to tackle the issue of burned connectors, which have been reported time and time again. According to ASUS’s marketing material, the cable was designed to even out the current distribution and control the connector temperatures.

Now, the post on Chiphell Forums does not have the full details, so we don’t know exactly which graphics card is culpable for this issue. We also don’t have the PSU model, load measurements, or other metrics that could help us determine the limits of ASUS’s new cable. Therefore, the report must be taken with a pinch of salt. ASUS has not yet issued an official statement regarding the issue.

Furthermore, the cable is not even widely available yet. ASUS has launched the ROG Equalizer in a staged manner, with distribution varying by region. The cable is supposed to be bundled with premium power supplies, such as the ASUS ROG Thor III, starting in Q2. With the cable carrying a hefty price tag of $50, this certainly is not a good look for ASUS ahead of global availability.
