Sony Continues To Struggle With Bungie Following $3.6 Billion Purchase!

Story Highlight
  • Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion several years ago, and the studio released Marathon in March.
  • In Q4 2026, Sony reported impairment losses of $565 million on Bungie.
  • In addition to previous impairment losses, the studio is now valued at less than $3 billion for PlayStation.

PlayStation’s latest financial reports are in, and they reiterate the gaming giant’s ongoing struggles with Bungie. Following a massive acquisition worth $3.6 billion, it’s been publicly known that Bungie hasn’t been the most lucrative of Sony’s purchases.

Between management struggles and Destiny’s declining popularity, Sony has found it difficult to justify this purchase time and again. The gaming giant’s latest financial data shows yet another red flag, highlighting an impairment loss on Bungie worth $500+ million.

Why it matters: PlayStation marking such a major loss on the studio in the same quarter as Marathon’s release is quite the cause for concern.

PlayStation’s latest financial report highlights data for the Fiscal Year 2025, which ended on March 31. For context, Marathon launched weeks prior on March 5.

According to the data, Sony recorded impairment losses against Bungie for two quarters during the Fiscal Year 2025. In Q2, the gaming giant’s losses totalled $204 million, while losses in Q4 exceeded $565 million.

In total, the impairment losses add up to nearly $770 million. For the unaware, this figure highlights a cumulative decline in Bungie’s value to Sony, which means that the company, initially purchased for 3.6 billion, is now worth under $3 billion to Sony.

Marathon
Marathon Is Not In The Best Shape At The Moment

The fact that Marathon hasn’t been performing the best likely won’t help the situation. Marathon’s impact on PlayStation’s financials should become apparent once the gaming giant begins reporting financial data for the Fiscal Year 2026.

What do you think about the financial data? Do you think Sony regrets its purchase of Bungie? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
