PlayStation's 2nd Big Extraction Shooter After Marathon!

Story Highlight
  • .A new report states that PlayStation is going all in on Haven Studios’ Fairgames.
  • The title is said to focus on heist-based extraction shooter and free-to-play gameplay.
  • A new playtest will also go live later this week as PlayStation seeks to refine the project further.

PlayStation announced Fairgames all the way back in 2023 as part of its major live-service push. However, following Concord’s disastrous release, the gaming giant has been forced to reevaluate the future of its live-service projects, leaving Fairgames in a challenging position.

Recent reports revealed that the game’s development was facing several hurdles, and the latest word on the matter suggests a major shift in priority from developer Haven Studios. It is said that Fairgames is targeting the extraction shooter genre.

Why it matters: PlayStation has been unusually quiet about this live-service project, leading to all sorts of speculations and theories.

PlayStation Dipped Its Toes Into Extraction Shooters With Marathon

As reported by Insider Gaming, Fairgames is set to go through another playtest this week as PlayStation continues to invest in the project.

At the time of its reveal in 2023, PlayStation never shared much detail regarding Fairgames in 2023, vaguely describing it as a heist experience. The report outlines that the mode ‘Cargo Heist’ focuses on breaking into a vault, grabbing cargo, and then extracting with said cargo.

Effectively, this is Haven Studios’ take on an extraction shooter. If this sounds familiar, the extraction shooter setup here appears somewhat reminiscent of Bungie’s Marathon.

Although Haven Studios may have always planned to target the extraction shooter market with Fairgames, it is possible that Bungie’s recent work on Marathon left an impression on the team.

The big difference here is that Haven Studios plans to launch the game as a free-to-play title.

Fairgames’ Debut Trailer Was Far From Impressive

Perhaps the most interesting part of Fairgames ‘ pursuit of the extraction shooter market is the fact that Bungie’s Marathon has not been the biggest success so far. With Haven Studios’ upcoming title not having the benefit of Bungie’s prestige and reputation, it might have an even harder time on the market.

Nonetheless, PlayStation seems to have gone all in on the project following multiple cancellations over the last few years.
