- Starfield lands on PS5 consoles on April 7.
- A new ‘Free Lanes’ update for the game will be a complete overhaul, add new content, and more.
- The same update also features a new paid DLC expansion titled ‘Terran Armada.’
When Starfield initially launched in 2023, the reception for Bethesda’s first new IP in over 2 decades was underwhelming, as many complained the sci-fi open-world game felt barren and boring.
Since then, Bethesda has been slowly but surely adding new content to improve the game’s state. Now, they’ve finally announced the game’s biggest update, which will overhaul it completely, alongside a new DLC expansion and a PS5 release date, in hopes of redeeming themselves.
Why it matters: Seeing how CD Projekt Red was able to redeem themselves with Cyberpunk 2077 2.0, many are hoping that Starfield would get a similar treatment, and so far, this update is looking promising.
PS5 users can expect to dig into Starfield on April 7 next month, the same date when the update ‘Free Lanes’ is dropping for all platforms. For the PS5 version, expect full support for the DualSense controller, which will showcase its capabilities.
The mid-gen refresh PS5 Pro will also support the game, with Bethesda likely using the new Enhanced PSSR tech to deliver solid visuals at a solid framerate. The game will be priced at $49.99 for the base game and $59.99 for the premium edition, which adds both DLC expansions, in-game currency, a digital artbook, and a skin pack.
As for the content, Free Lanes is described as a ‘game-wide evolution‘ by Bethesda that revamps travel in space, changes how game progression works, introduces new abilities, side quests, and customizable options that will offer tons of hours of more gameplay and fix the biggest issue of the game feeling bland.

The new DLC expansion will be titled ‘Terran Armada,’ introducing a new hostile faction that claims to be ‘true’ children of the Earth. The expansion will also add an incursion mechanic, which is a random encounter with the Terran Armada throughout the settled systems.
