Resident Evil Requiem Achieves 90 FPS On Apple M4 Max Using CrossOver

The Crossover Solution For Resident Evil Requiem on Mac!

Story Highlight
  • While not natively available for macOS, Resident Evil Requiem runs at roughly 90 FPS on M4 Max chips using Crossover 26.
  • High frame rates on Mac require FSR3 upscaling and AMD frame generation to overcome compatibility layers.
  • Mac users may still encounter lighting glitches and performance dips during cinematic scenes.

Resident Evil is widely regarded as the most well-known survival horror video game franchise, and Resident Evil Requiem was released in 2026 to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

This would be the ninth game in the franchise if we count Resident Evil Village (2021) as the eighth and Resident Evil 7 as the game that launched the series’ new era. The game was recently launched, and while it is not natively compatible with Apple devices, it is possible to play Resident Evil Requiem at high FPS thanks to the M4 Max CPU’s raw power.

While there is no port for Apple PCs and laptops, you can play using Crossover, a compatibility layer that enables PC games to run on Macs. This layer is compatible with DirectX 12 games running Metal on macOS, including the latest Resident Evil.

One Reddit user swears it operates smoothly. They shared a screenshot of it getting over 90 FPS (88.34 FPS) right at the start of the game on the city streets. This is a much more difficult location than the closed, interior environments that come later; thus, the outcome is excellent. We can also see it operating at a resolution of 1800 x 1169 pixels, which is comparable to 1920 x 1080 Full HD.

The user stated that, while the gameplay has a high framerate and the frametime curve appears to be very constant, there are some notable performance drops during cutscenes as well as some lighting artifacts. This was all tested on a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Max processor and 36 GB of RAM (it only has 16 GB).

To run it, they utilized Crossover 26 Preview with Steam and set the visuals to high. This may surprise you, given that just a few months ago, a game like Diablo 2 could barely run at 40 FPS, but there’s a catch.

To hit 90 fps, it needed to use FSR3 upscaling in balanced mode, as well as AMD frame generation. So, without frame generation, you may anticipate 50-55 FPS in the same scene as FSR3, which isn’t awful, but bear in mind that this game is quite optimized (in comparison to others).

Resident Evil Requiem operates flawlessly on the Nintendo Switch 2, and even on a Steam Deck, you can achieve 60 FPS or higher, while it is recommended to set the limit to 40 FPS. As you can see, Apple is still far behind, as the M4 Max is significantly more powerful than these mobile consoles, but Crossover lets you do something that was not possible before: play Windows Steam games on a Mac.
