Assassin’s Creed Hexe Director Exits Ubisoft in Major Shakeup, Black Flag Director Takes Charge

Clint Hocking Previously Worked As A Creative Director For Far Cry 2 And Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory!

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Hexe creative director, Clint Hocking, has now been replaced following leadership changes.
  • Jean Guesdon, director of Black Flag and the series’ brand manager, has now filled the role.
  • This move raises caution, especially since the game is in the late stage of development.

Now at rock bottom, Ubisoft is seeking a comeback, leading to a massive restructuring at the publisher that has resulted in the purge of several upcoming titles, including the Sands of Time remake, as well as layoffs across multiple studios.

Notably, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has now also seen a leadership change, with the director of Black Flag now leading the series’ future. This power shift has now also led to the creative director of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe to part ways with the publisher.

Why it matters: Ubisoft aims to make its core IPs billion-dollar franchises; it is taking what it believes are drastic measures to ensure high quality across all its upcoming releases.

This Year’s Assassin’s Creed Release Is The Remake Of 2014’s Black Flag

As a Ubisoft spokesperson tells VGC, Clint Hocking, the creative director for Assassin’s Creed Hexe, will be replaced by Jean Guesdon, the director behind Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and now also the series’ brand manager.

“We sincerely thank (Clint) for his vision, creative contributions, and dedication over the years, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter,”

While Clint Hocking has a great portfolio, notably as a creative director on Far Cry 2 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, his more recent work has been somewhat lacking. He was also the creative director behind Watch Dogs: Legion, an entry that is said to seal the series’ fate.

“Development on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe continues with a seasoned team.”

Now, Jean Guesdon will be taking the helm for codenamed Hexe. Recently, the publisher also onboarded Batman: Arkham Origins’ director to lead the charge of Assassin’s Creed Hexe.

Although it is looking a bit troublesome for the game to have its creative director depart at such a late stage of development. Initially announced in 2022 as a “different type of Assassin’s Creed game,” codename Hexe is currently eyeing a 2027 release.
