Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft is laying off a bunch of employees at The Division and Avatar studio, Massive Entertainment.
  • Employees got an email that revealed that the layoffs are a part of restructuring.
  • The studio is currently working on The Division 3, which has very high expectations.

Ubisoft just can’t seem to catch a break. After struggling with falling stocks, a partnership with Tencent, and poor game sales, it has now announced another round of layoffs. For context, it just laid off a bunch of employees in September

The studio behind The Division and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Massive Entertainment, has been hit with layoffs. The employees were informed through an email that the studio is restructuring, which will reportedly affect 55 jobs.

Why it matters: Ubisoft has now laid off employees at least 3 times in just a span of around 1 year. So, while their financial report was relatively positive, layoffs are mostly an indication that the company wants further expense reduction.

Massive Entertainment will see about 55 employees lose their jobs

Massive’s Malmö and Stockholm locations have been affected by this restructuring. The email delivered to employees states that the layoffs aren’t based on individual performance, recent deliveries, or quality.

The proposed restructuring will begin with a focus on individual agreements and impacted employees are being informed directly and supported with care and respect.

It further reads that the direction of the studio is still the same and clear, as it aims to focus on The Division franchise. Moreover, the team is also working on a project that focuses on tech and innovation, which will be revealed later.

Massive Entertainment, of course, is currently working on The Division 3. The expectations from the title are immense, as the executive producer commented that the game will have as big an impact as the first game in the series.
