Bethesda Veteran Dev Slams $100 Game Prices: ‘They’re Out of Touch’

Even Calls $70 Games A Stretch!

Story Highlight
  • A former Bethesda lead dev has called out the potential $100 pricing for games.
  • He says this is out of touch, and people don’t want to spend this much on games.
  • Purkeypile says this is what has pushed him and other players towards indie titles.

Game prices are a big topic of discussion in the current gaming industry. With the development budgets reaching hundreds of millions of Dollars, studios are now pushing to increase the regular $70 AAA price tag to a new high of up to $100.

A Bethesda veteran, however, disagrees with pricing premium games at $100 and says it’s too much; he’d be surprised if anyone does this. For context, industry analysts have predicted that GTA 6 could be the first $100-priced title

Why it matters: If GTA 6 indeed launches at the higher price tag, this would be a tipping point for other studios to follow suit and similarly price all the newer high-budget games.

GTA 6 is rumored to be the first game with a $100 price tag

Former Bethesda lead artist, Nate Purkeypile, whose credits include games like Fallout and Skyrim, has called out $100 games, saying that they are out of touch. He says even he doesn’t want to spend too much on games.

I think $100 is too much, and I’d be surprised if they did that. I think it’s better to monetise in other ways with more DLC and optional stuff.

– Nate Purkeypile

Purkeypile says that they’re are other ways you can monetize a game to earn good revenue, like launching DLCs and more, but pricing them high isn’t the way. He said that even $70 prices are a stretch for him.

Borderlands 4 received massive backlash for trying the $80 price tag

Part of the reason he now leans towards indie games is that they provide much better value at a lot lower price, and the case is similar for general consumers as well, which most people will definitely agree with.

Players have given massive backlash to companies trying to price games at $80, like Borderlands 4 and Outerworld 2, which led them to backtrack their prices, so $100 price is certainly out of the question for most.
