- Valve states that the Steam Machine is a PC and will be priced like a PC, but competitively.
- So, it won’t feature console pricing of around $500, which many were expecting.
- This puts the Steam Machine under a different category, and gamers are curious.
Valve recently introduced its Steam Machine, a console-like PC designed to deliver the ultimate couch gaming experience. It’s a step away from traditional consoles, and that could be imminent from the pricing as well, once it’s revealed.
A recent update shared by Valve suggests that the Steam Machine won’t have console pricing; instead, it is a PC, and will be priced like a PC. So, for those hoping for $500-$600 machine, we have some bad news for you.
Why it matters: A good price would’ve made the Machine an obvious choice with the potential to disrupt the market led by PlayStation and Xbox, but high pricing could make things a lot different.
In a recent The Wan Show Episode, Linus said that he asked Valve about the potential pricing for the Steam Machine. They clearly hinted that it would not have console pricing, but would be a competitively priced PC.
Valve asked what I meant by console price, and I said $500. Nobody said anything, but the energy in the room wasn’t great.

Valve said that for traditional consoles, companies subsidize them through software sales and keep the hardware prices down; the Steam Machine doesn’t have the same liberty. So, we could be looking at well over $500.

This puts the hardware in a very weird spot. If we consider the PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X 2TB, both of which can go up to $800, the Steam Machine‘s price could be a lot higher than what we all have been expecting.
However, based on the comments and reactions, while console pricing would’ve been more tempting, people will be fine even with a $700 price tag, but nothing more. But let’s just wait and watch out for the final pricing.
