OpenAI is currently changing the entire landscape of technology with its AI initiatives. In addition to ChatGPT, the company has introduced revolutionary models like Sora, shaping the future of films and other industries in real time.
All of these technological leaps require rigorous and continuous AI data training, and OpenAI has made great use of Nvidia’s advanced GPUs for this specific purpose so far. However, the company has confirmed that it will also work with AMD on AI technology moving forward.
Why it matters: Nvidia has remained unmatched in the AI industry so far, but AMD’s partnership with the leading generative AI company could set the stage for Team Red’s rapid growth in this industry.
AMD CEO Lisa Su recently confirmed that the two companies have entered a multi-year partnership. Under this deal, the company will deploy 6GWs of AMD Instinct GPUs.
The deal will officially show results as early as H2 2026 when 1GW of the AMD MI450 AI chips are deployed. AMD also expects to make up to $100 billion by the time this 6GW target is met over the next few years.
Moreover, OpenAI is set to purchase a 10% stake in AMD as part of the partnership, which should amount to around $160 million in shares. This deal comes after OpenAI already invested a significant amount of money in Nvidia’s technology.
Until recently, Nvidia was OpenAI’s exclusive partner for hardware used to train AI models. The company’s leading products have already seen OpenAI investing in new platforms like Vera Rubin, but this deal opens up new opportunities for yet another AMD-Nvidia rivalry.
AMD could even use the much-needed exposure to its AI chips for further collaborations with other giants investing heavily in AI technology.
