Something Very Different For God of War Fans!

Story Highlight
  • God of War’s next mainline title reportedly features Egyptian mythology.
  • Kratos is set to wield a curved Egyptian sword in the game, which could make for a unique combat system.
  • PlayStation could tease or reveal the title at its next State of Play.

The God of War franchise is no stranger to different settings and gameplay styles, with the last two entries taking Kratos to the Norse realms. God of War’s previous two releases have also been incredibly successful, with fans now looking toward the future.

Amid a slew of past rumors and speculation, a reliable insider now suggests that Kratos is heading to Egypt for his next adventure.

Why it matters: This is something fans have wanted for the longest time due to the richness of the Egyptian mythology. They believe the larger Egyptian mythos would be a perfect fit for Kratos’ rage-fueled adventures.

The report comes from Tom Henderson, an insider known for his accuracy in reporting information regarding PlayStation. During a recent episode of the Insider Gaming Podcast, Tom Henderson revealed that Kratos would sport an Egyptian sword in the next game.

Although he did not go into too much detail, this statement more or less confirms that Egypt is the next location for the mainline title. Interestingly, the aforementioned Egyptian sword could also be Kratos’ primary weapon this time around.

Typically, the Greek warrior has never relied on a sword as a mainline weapon. Weapons like the Blade of Olympus filled the sword archetype in past games, but the statement suggests the Egyptian sword will be more akin to the Leviathan Axe from the last two games.

As such, this would be a first for the IP and unlock the doors to a different combat style for Kratos.

PlayStation is rumored to host a State of Play very soon. Games like Wolverine are expected to show up at the event, so there is a chance God of War will make its appearance during the livestream, given the fact that the series has been away for around three years.

Meanwhile, a Metroidvania spin-off is also rumored, so series fans certainly have a lot to look forward to.

Do you think the Egyptian mythology would be a good fit for God of War? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
