Sony Is Discounting PlayStation 5 In China Amid Recent Price Hike

PS5 Pro Now Costs $750 In The US!

Story Highlight
  • Sony has announced a price hike for the PlayStation 5 in the US, citing changing economic conditions.
  • At the same time, the company revealed discounts for the base PS5 models in China.
  • The contrasting decisions have sparked controversy among fans, as both announcements were made simultaneously.

Price hikes in the gaming industry are almost always met with backlash, as fans dislike paying more for the products they love. Recently, Nintendo raised the prices of its games and largely ignored player feedback.

Meanwhile, Microsoft faced a similar situation when it attempted to increase its game prices to $80. The backlash was so intense that the company reverted to its original pricing. Sony has avoided raising game prices so far, but it did recently increase the price of PS5 models in the US. Interestingly, in contrast, the company has discounted the console in China.

Why it matters: This inconsistency is bound to frustrate fans. While tariffs play a role in regional pricing, many players won’t care about those details; seeing price hikes in one region and discounts in another will only fuel more criticism.

Sony Has Discounted The PlayStation 5 Base Models In China, While Increasing Prices In The US

Daniel Camilo on X pointed out that Sony’s PlayStation 5 discounts in China will begin on August 25. The timing of this announcement caused some confusion, as it was made alongside the US price hike, leading some fans to believe the discount had already gone live.

According to Camilo, starting August 25, the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at $390, while the disc version will cost $474. This contrast is likely to spark even more controversy, given that Sony just raised PS5 prices by $50 in the US.

It is worth noting that Sony has not mentioned whether the discount applies to the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Since the model was not referenced in the announcement, it appears that only the base versions, both Digital and Disc, are being discounted. Even so, this remains a significant move for the Chinese market.
