A lot has been said about the power of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its technical capabilities. Nintendo’s latest hardware is said to be 10x more powerful than its predecessor, but testing reveals that it still falls behind modern consoles by a lot.
Even lower-end consoles like the Xbox Series S are significantly more capable, as new testing shows the Nintendo Switch 2 performance to be in line with the GTX 1050 Ti.
Why it matters: The GTX 1050 Ti was released all the way back in 2016, and it was only considered impressive as a budget offering at the time.
YouTuber Geekerwan recently managed to obtain a real Nintendo Switch 2 motherboard.
Testing of this motherboard revealed that the console packs a total of 1536 CUDA cores for its GPU, which is largely in line with the past leaks. The GPU itself is also based on the Ampere architecture, though it comes with more than a few modifications.
For performance, Geekerwan decided to test the Nintendo Switch 2 using a laptop RTX 2050. This particular RTX 2050 features 2048 CUDA cores and a 64-bit memory bus. The GPU was also massively downclocked to mimic Nintendo’s new hardware.
The YouTuber’s testing concluded that the Nintendo Switch 2 offered results similar to the GTX 1050 Ti in docked mode, achieving a score of 2205 in 3DMark. For reference, a rough simulation equivalent to the Xbox Series S achieved a score of 3786 in the same test.
Moreover, the PS5 proves to be over 4x as capable in the same test. Looking at the handheld results, Nintendo’s hardware could manage performance similar to the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti, putting it close to the PS4 and Steam Deck’s results.
All in all, the console is still far behind the current industry standard, but it offers a major jump over the older Nintendo Switch from 2017.
