Indiana Jones and the Great Circle originally launched on December 8 on Xbox and PC via Steam. While Phil Spencer expressed that there were no plans to launch the game on PS5 at first, the title eventually crawled onto the platform on April 17.
Now, an in-depth analysis shows that Indiana Jones is a bigger hit on PS5 than Xbox and Steam and has sold more copies on Sony’s platform than the other two in the same period.
Why it matters: Amid failing Xbox Series sales, the company is making a strong push towards publishing, hence the higher sales will be a good sign for them going into the future.
Alinea Analytics has compiled sales data from Indiana Jones 4 days before and 6 days after its launch on the respective platforms. While pre-orders were strong with the Steam version, PS5 eventually caught up and sold more copies by day 6.
Almost a week after the launch, Indiana Jones sold 91.2K copies on Steam, whereas the number is 117.2K copies on the PS5. That’s a 28% faster pace despite the initial sales being quite low.
In addition, on Xbox, it is estimated that about 5 million players have given the title a go. However, a huge chunk of this came from Game Pass, so sales numbers were significantly lower, an example of how subscription cannibalizes sales.
Despite low sales on other platforms, Microsoft will be glad that PlayStation is generating good sales. Analysis also reveals that PlayStation players are more drawn to IP-driven narrative-based games.
