- The RTX 5000 series GPUs were hard to find at MSRP.
- While the Radeon 9000 series GPUs offer better performance at a lower cost, they are mostly being sold above the MSRP.
- Still, AMD’s Radeon 9000 series was somewhat easier to find at MSRP compared to the RTX 5000 series.
In addition to having very little availability, the RTX 5000 series was also far more expensive than anticipated. AMD’s Radeon 9000 series delivers better performance at a lower cost, but finding it at MSRP is nearly impossible.
Why it matters: High prices and limited availability make it harder for people to buy GPUs at MSRP. It also forces buyers to pay more, limiting access to affordable technology for gaming.
The official launch went both well and terribly because, while certain GPUs were available at MSRP, the great majority were more costly. Since the price would change depending on many circumstances, AMD had previously stated that it was not a good idea to look at the MSRP when making a purchase.
According to Gamers Nexus, We are living in a generation of graphics cards with inflated MSRP. Starting with the XT model, they created a table listing every GPU model available in various places (a total of 51), only 12 of which were offered at MSRP.
This results in an average price of $739 for the card, which is $139 more than AMD’s MSRP of $600. With the worst-case scenarios being the XFX RX 9070 XT Mercury Magnetic Air OC and PowerColor RX 9070 XT Red Devil Limited Edition, which are sold +42% more expensive.
The average price increase, when considering all models and retailers, would be +23%. That said few ASUS variants have turned out to be 33% more expensive than the official price, while ASRock has been the closest to it with only a +11% increase. XFX on the other hand have been on average +29% more expensive.
However, looking at overall sales, it looks like it was much easier to find MSRP cards compared to the GeForce RTX 5000 series. In terms of overall sales, 319 of the 759 RX 9070 XT graphics cards and 102 of the 215 RX 9070 cards were sold at their MSRP.
Although the numbers are quite low at 47.5% for the RX 9070 and 45.2% for the RX 9070 XT, that were sold at MSRP. Its still better than what the competition had to offer, especially when you consider Nvidia’s higher than expected MSRP.
