The Steam Deck isn’t the first time that Valve entered the console market. The gaming giant previously attempted to enter the hardware market with Steam Machines, but it was a terribly failed attempt.
However, new leaks suggest that the company is willing to enter the console market again. According to eXtas1s, a reliable leaker, Valve is currently developing a Steam console that would compete with the PS5 and Xbox consoles.
Why it matters: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft hold the console market. The barrier to entry is so high that it’s almost exciting to see what innovation Valve will bring to the market after failed attempts and experience.
The console is allegedly being powered by AMD’s RDNA 4 technology, something we’re still in the dark about despite its announcement a month ago at CES 2025.
Previously, data mining revealed that Valve was developing a Steam console, a Steam controller 2, and a VR headset.
It’s important to notice that these leaks should be taken with a grain of salt until official confirmation.
While a Valve Steam console idea doesn’t sound too bad, competing with the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles this late into the generation seems confusing. The PS5 and Xbox Series also started showing their age quite early, and the next-gen consoles have already begun to leak.
Moreover, Valve’s hardware availability is also very scarce, with the Steam Deck not being available in every region. They clearly lack the budget to compete with Microsoft and Sony’s marketing and production.
The console would have to be extremely niche and likely expand the Steam OS, which is already an ecosystem that Valve is pushing to other handhelds like the Asus Rog Ally, similar to what Xbox is trying to do.
