PS5 To Still Dominate Hardware Sales This Year In US Despite Switch 2’s Release, Predicts Analyst

Switch 2 Is Expected To Suffer Major Stock Issues!

Story Highlight
  • An analyst has predicted that PlayStation 5 will dominate US hardware sales this year despite Switch 2’s launch.
  • PS5 will likely continue to roll over units like hotcakes because of upcoming games like GTA 6 and Ghost of Yotei.
  • On the flip side, the Switch 2 might suffer stock issues instead, as demand will likely surge out of control.

After the dominance of the Switch in the console and handheld market for many years, all eyes are on Nintendo’s upcoming console. The gaming industry’s worst-kept secret implies that it’s just called the Switch 2, with upgrades that make it as powerful as base last-gen consoles. However, the little giant will likely run modern AAA games using a custom Nvidia DLSS-like upscaler.

Ever since most of the Switch 2 leaked online, analysts have been making pretty insane projections regarding how it’ll perform against the industry’s other established consoles.

Now, Mat Piscatella, the notable industry analyst and executive director of games at Circana, claims that the PS5 hardware sales in the US won’t easily fall below Switch 2 this year, as rumors would have you believe.

Why it matters: Switch 2 sales are expected to surpass its predecessor but might struggle against the PS5 in the US this year because of stock issues. On the flip side, the PS5 is projected to sell like hotcakes because of GTA 6 and other games.

The analyst Mat Piscatella claims that PS5 US hardware sales this year won't be surpassed by Switch 2.
The analyst says that Switch 2 won’t surpass PS5’s US hardware sales this year.

Mat Piscatella claims on Bluesky that Switch 2 is projected to sell 4.3 million units in the US alone this year, assuming it launches in the first half. This will account for nearly one-third of all console hardware sold in the year besides PC portables.

However, PlayStation 5 will likely have an upper hand in the US because of Switch 2’s insane demand, which will cause its stock to plummet for the first several months.

Another notable reason for PS5’s dominance is because of the potential release of titles like GTA 6 and Ghost of Yotei. Regardless, the Switch 2 might sell up to 17 million units globally this year—if it launches in March as expected.

Switch 2 is not expected to be as powerful as PS4 Pro.

All in all, it is best to take the analyst’s predictions with a huge pinch of salt, as Nintendo might have prepared enough Switch 2 stock to take over PS5’s hardware US sales this year.

Do you think Switch 2 will dominate PlayStation 5’s US hardware sales in the future, if not in 2025? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.
