PS5 Pro With PSSR Can’t Maintain 60 FPS In Space Marine 2

Xbox Series X Offers Better Performance In Some Instances!

Story Highlight
  • Digital Foundry recently released a tech review of Space Marine 2 for PS5 Pro, base PS5, and Xbox Series X.
  • The review concluded that PS5 Pro can’t maintain 60 FPS in the game even with PSSR.
  • In some cases, the Xbox Series X can also have some advantages over the pro console, but overall, the latter is better.

It has been well over a month since the controversial PS5 Pro was released. While the console seems to have sold well, its reception wasn’t that positive in the beginning. The PSSR, Sony’s new AI technology, has been praised by many, but it still needs a lot of work.

Just recently, patch 1.5 for Space Marine 2 was released, so Digital Foundry decided to do a tech review for the mid-gen refresh, PS5 base console, and Xbox Series X. The review revealed some interesting details, one of the main ones being PS5 Pro’s failure to maintain 60FPS.

Why it matters: There have been many instances where the pro variant can’t maintain 60FPS in games. Experts even revealed that it can’t run games like Baldur’s Gate 3, which are CPU intensive at 60FPS.

The PS5 Pro can have a noticeable performance boost over the base console in Space Marine 2, but it still can’t maintain 60 FPS. In some instances, the frame rates are abysmal, dropping to almost 40.

Even the opening cutscene has many drops in FPS. When facing a huge swarm of enemies, both the base console and the mid-gen refresh struggle to get close to 50FPS.

The frame rates on the former can be seen dropping to 35, while the latter can stay over 40. This is still not close to an ideal 60FPS experience, which might disappoint many. However, the pro does offer better resolution and image quality than the base version.

Another thing that might surprise fans is that, in one instance, the Xbox Series X has a 5 FPS advantage over the PS5 Pro in Space Marine 2. After patch 1.5, the Xbox Series X can be seen having an advantage over the PS5 Pro, but in most cases, the latter prevails.

All in all, the mid-gen refresh fails to maintain 60 FPS in many other games, so it might not be surprising anymore.

What do you think about Sony’s latest mid-gen refresh’s inability to maintain 60FPS in Space Marine 2? Do you think the pro variant is worth its price tag? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below or join the official Tech4Gamers forums for discussion.
