Incredibly Powerful Handheld From Xbox Coming Up!

Story Highlight
  • A new report suggests that Xbox could be using the AMD Z2 Extreme chip for its handheld device.
  • AMD recently held a meeting where they revealed the chip and Microsoft was present too.
  • AMD Z2 Extreme will bring significant performance and battery improvements.

The gaming handheld space is really heating up. With so many releases in the past years like Steam Deck, ROG Ally, MSI Claw, and more, PlayStation and Xbox are rumored to mark their spot too. A report states that the Xbox handheld could use AMD’s Z2 Extreme chipset.

Why it matters? We saw AMD introducing its Extreme chips with the ROG Ally. The chip is quite powerful already, and if the Xbox handheld indeed uses the next iteration, we could be looking at a significantly powerful device.

The Xbox handheld device could use an AMD Z2 Extreme chip

According to eXtas1s, a reliable leaker, AMD plans to release the Z2 Extreme in early 2025. The chip will reportedly offer great performance improvements in gaming over its predecessor. Interstingly, Xbox was at the meeting too.

In AMD, official presentation, they revealed their aims with this new chip. The first is more efficiency for a better battery life. Their other motive is to be able to play demanding AAA games smoothly, and they gave the example of Black Myth: Wukong.

The battery jump seems to be massive too. With the ROG Ally X, you are looking at just 30 to 45 minutes of gameplay without plugged in before the battery dies. With the Z2 Extreme, AMD aims to achieve at least 3 hours.

The Z2 Extreme will be a significant upgrade over the Z1 Extreme chip

Considering, that Xbox has plans to launch its handheld, the AMD Z2 Extreme could be a great option. Z1 Extreme powered devices are some of the most powerful handhelds on the market and Xbox could take it a notch up by using the version with its handheld.

It should be noted that Microsoft hasn’t officially announced the handheld yet but there is solid evidence it’s in the works. However, using Z2 Extreme is speculation, so take this with a grain of salt.

In other news, PlayStation also seems to be jumping on the handheld bandwagon too. Though the company is no stranger to them, they haven’t released any portable device since the PS Vista in 2011, not including the latest PS Portal.
