Ex-Rockstar Dev Pushes For AI Revolution, Says GTA 6 Is Using AI

Expert Verified By

"I've heard of GTA 6 using new technology."

Story Highlight
  • Former Rockstar director advocates for increased AI use in game animation to enhance realism and efficiency.
  • Vermeij speculates GTA 6’s impressive animations may be AI-driven, especially in the beach scene from the trailer.
  • He believes Rockstar Games is the only studio that could lead an AI revolution in the gaming industry.

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar Games director, has called for a big change in game development. He believes developers should use more AI and physics-based animations instead of relying on traditional hand-drawn techniques.

Vermeij’s comments come as the gaming industry’s big dogs consider using generative AI. He thinks that the future of game development will rely on using AI and physics to make animations more dynamic and realistic.

Why it matters: The use of AI in game development is becoming more and more common with each passing day.

Although Vermeij doesn’t have insider knowledge about GTA 6, he speculated on the impressive beach scene from the trailer, noting the dynamic animations for each character.

While talking during an interview, the former Rockstar director said he has heard that these animations might be using advanced AI and physics technology rather than being manually created.

I’ve heard rumors of GTA 6 using new technology and having to do with animation and AI and stuff.

Vermeij also believes that Rockstar Games is the only studio that can push for an AI revolution in the industry. If they start utilizing generative AI in video games, other studios will follow suit.

I think it’s time for a revolution where animation is not hand animated anymore.

Hand-drawn animations are artistic but take a lot of time and effort. AI, on the other hand, can manage repetitive tasks, giving developers more time to improve the overall experience.

GTA 6
The GTA 6 map is expected to feature 3 different islands apart from the main state.

Take-Two’s CEO previously said that AI will never be able to replace jobs. He recognizes that the technology can improve the efficiency and quality of development, but it will not replace creative professionals.

This isn’t the only odd thing Vermeij said in the interview. While talking about the expectations for GTA 6, he said it will not be any different from GTA 5, and people might be disappointed.

Anyhow, Vermeij does not want to take anything away from GTA 6, and believes it’s still going to be the best game out there.

The GTA 6 trailer has already broken records, quickly becoming one of the most-watched videos on YouTube with 200 million views. This just shows how hyped people are to get their hands on Rockstar’s biggest title to date.
