The RTX 5090 graphics card will have a memory layout different from the RTX 4090. Rumors suggest the Blackwell GB202 GPU, expected to launch by the end of 2024, will have a 512-bit memory bus.
More modules would be needed to surround the GPU in order to accommodate the anticipated increase in memory capacity. The source of the rumor is Panzerlied, a member of the Chiphell Forum who has been active in discussing what the next generation of Nvidia cards have to offer.
Why it matters: Previously, Nvidia was expected to offer the same 24GB memory setup for its flagship GPU this generation, but the new rumor makes this discussion more interesting.
The RTX 5090 is anticipated to support GDDR7 memory in a denser arrangement compared to the current RTX 4090. To accommodate up to 16 memory modules, the layout will change from 3-4-1-4 to 4-5-2-5 (clockwise).
This does not, however, imply that every module must be utilized or that all of its capabilities are met. On the other hand, the RTX 5090 could provide up to 32GB of memory if it uses identical 2GB modules.
Since the majority of high-end graphics cards today use 384-bit memory interfaces at their maximum density, this could be the densest design we have seen yet. It would also be the first Nvidia card to feature a 512-bit bus after several years.
Nvidia is reportedly developing a completely new PCB solution. Three unique PCB designs are expected to be used in the production of the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition card.
It’s unclear if that’s a reference to three separate PCBs on one card or three different designs.
While the actual board was never seen, numerous leaks of the prototype cooler for this design have been reported. According to the leaks, this PCB layout appears to be topped with a quad-slot, triple-fan cooler.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 are currently anticipated to go on sale in Q4 2024.
