Ubisoft To Prioritize High Quality Games From Now!

Story Highlight
  • The Division Heartland is no longer in development.
  • Ubisoft is moving Red Storm Entertainment developers to support projects like Rainbow Six Siege.
  • The studio will be more selective with its games moving forward.

Ubisoft is no stranger to cancelling various projects. In recent years, the publisher has dabbled in various genres and spin-offs based on its popular IPs, resulting in multiple cancellations.

One such spin-off was The Division Heartland. While an early 2024 launch was expected for this free-to-play title, Ubisoft has confirmed that work on the game is no longer moving ahead.

Why it matters: The Division Heartland was set to be part of Ubisoft’s live-service ambitions, helping the gaming giant break into the free-to-play market.

According to Ubisoft, the title has been cancelled to move resources to other projects.

This includes major franchises like XDefiant and Rainbow Six Siege, the latter of which has been going strong for many years. The studio says it will move developers from Red Storm Entertainment to these other projects promptly.

According to Ubisoft, nearly 2,000 developers have been let go since 2022. These changes are being made as part of a larger restructuring plan, with the studio moving ahead to ensure its future in the industry.

While the project was first revealed many years ago, it seems Ubisoft was unable to make meaningful progress.

Various projects, including Skull and Bones, have already been through several years of development hell at Ubisoft, so this may have been a wise decision. The team is also focused on The Division 3, so this cancellation may not have been the worst outcome.

According to Ubisoft, this cancellation marks a shift where projects are prioritized based on their potential. Therefore, the publisher is likely to release fewer games moving forward while ensuring a high level of quality for each one.
