Xbox May Introduce Game Pass With Ads Soon!

Story Highlight
  • Latest reports say that Microsoft is planning a new tier for Game Pass.
  • The tier will likely incorporate ads to some extent as Microsoft aims to make the subscription more lucrative.
  • A price hike for the original service is also expected alongside this new tier.

While it was previously speculated that Xbox might skip Call of Duty and other Activision titles on Game Pass, Sarah Bond has already confirmed that all first-party releases will continue to be added to the service.

However, it seems Microsoft is looking to alter its strategy instead of completely changing it. According to the latest reports, Xbox is looking to introduce a new tier of Game Pass as well as a price hike.

Why it matters: Microsoft seems to be following in the wake of other subscriptions. Previously, the likes of Netflix have tried budget tiers that incorporate ads.

Game Pass is a lucrative option for Xbox on paper, but the service has been unable to grow for a while. This may have been the primary reason for the price hike, though a bump was always inevitable.

Previously, the reliable Tom Warren stated that Xbox has been looking at upping the price of this service. Another insider with an accurate track record now suggests that a price increase is likely to happen.

However, he also adds that Microsoft is looking to expand the service with a completely new tier.

I’ve even heard that there is a new tier of Game Pass coming.

Such a tier has long been anticipated for Game Pass. Xbox may offer the service at a cheaper rate, adding the downside of advertisements to recoup costs.

This would allow the gaming giant to keep Game Pass afloat while offering titles like Call of Duty. It is also speculated that the entry-level option will come with a smaller catalog of games.

Diablo 4 Is Still The Only New Activision Title on The Subscription

With Game Pass continuing to add new premium releases without much growth, this price hike seems like a natural step for Xbox. However, there is concern that these measures may harm the service further.

Last year, the subscription service added games valued at $9K. With the entire Call of Duty franchise expected to join the mix, this value proposition will only go up, even if it may come with a price hike.
