Sea of Thieves Joined PlayStation’s Top 3 Games of April In Just One Day

#1 Most Downloaded PS5 Game In Europe!

Story Highlight
  • Sea of Thieves has become PlayStation’s 3rd most downloaded game of April.
  • It took the top spot in Europe and the third spot in US/Canada for most PS5 downloads.
  • The ranking is impressive since the game was released on the very last day of April.

Sea of Thieves, a former Xbox exclusive, found its way to PlayStation last month, and it has received a far warmer welcome than initially expected, with Sony helping Rare throughout the porting process.

It also became PlayStation’s most pre-ordered game before launch, and the PS5 version is on par with, if not better than, the Xbox Series X version. With such excitement before launch, Sea of Thieves has landed among PlayStation’s biggest releases of April.

Why it matters: Xbox reportedly tested the potential of PS5 releases with this launch, so the reception is a bigger deal than it may initially seem.

As shared on the PlayStation Blog, Sea of Thieves was the #1 most downloaded PS5 game in Europe. In the US/Canada, it became the third biggest release, finishing in the top 3 across all major regions.

What makes this so commendable is the fact that it was available for a single day in April. This title hit the PS5 on April 30, giving it less time than the competition to secure additional sales.

Meanwhile, new releases like Stellar Blade also showed impressive results. Stellar Blade finished within the top 4 most downloaded titles across both regions, while PlayStation’s Helldivers 2 took the top spot in the US/Canada.

Overall, first-party games, whether they be from PlayStation or Xbox, performed well on the platform last month.

Since Xbox’s multiplatform experience has seemingly been a huge success, more titles are almost guaranteed to arrive on PlayStation and Nintendo hardware. Among other franchises, recent rumors point to Hellblade 2 as a potential candidate.

However, Microsoft is likely to wait a while before porting such big releases to rival platforms.

Anyhow, this is a huge moment for Sea of Thieves and Rare. Today, this title is a major live-service success story, especially because it wasn’t always the best game to play.

Perhaps this is also an opportunity for both gaming giants to reflect on the potential for multiplatform releases since this is clearly beneficial compared to the traditional approach of exclusive releases.
