Story Highlight
  • Rockstar Games is abandoning its remote and hybrid work policy today.
  • GTA 6 was the first game to be created through this approach.
  • The team hopes in-person work will help it meet the 2025 launch target.

GTA 6 is rapidly headed toward a 2025 launch. However, Rockstar Games’ ability to meet this target has become a concern.

According to recent reports, the team is hoping to avoid any delays. Toward this end, the studio has asked its workers to return for in-person work from today, marking a new chapter of faster GTA 6 development.

Why it matters: The studio has been known to delay its games, including Red Dead Redemption 2, on multiple occasions in the past.

Each Rockstar Games release until now has been handled by typical in-person work five days a week. This policy has led to astronomically successful releases like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, following the pandemic in 2020, Rockstar Games, along with various other teams, shifted to hybrid development. Many studios have adopted this policy permanently, though not everyone is pleased with the approach.

Following the reports, various Rockstar Games employees raised concerns about a return to crunch culture. They appear to be more than satisfied with the current model, with the GTA 6 trailer being evidence of its practicality.

Ultimately, this means that GTA 6 will now progress faster than before. How much of a difference this makes in terms of the studio’s ability to meet the 2025 launch window remains to be seen, but management does not seem interested in a delay.

Take-Two has already outlined major financial projections for its Fiscal Year, taking the GTA 6 launch into account.

Recent rumors of a potential delay hit this publisher’s stock, so it is easy to see why Rockstar Games is trying to avoid any delays. The share price fell by as much as 8% in 2024.

It is also important to note that the launch won’t mark the end of development for Rockstar Games since the studio will likely begin work on the PC port and GTA Online content right away.

Therefore, in-person work may not be such a terrible move. We only hope the studio can provide excellent working conditions for its staff and avoid all forms of crunch.
