- The Asus ROG Ally Z1 non-Extreme has received a massive discount.
- BestBuy is now selling the discounted handheld console for just $300.
- This variant of the handheld outperforms the original Steam Deck.
When looking for a new handheld console, gamers may find themselves having to decide between the Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally. While both options offer decent performance, the Asus ROG Ally Z1 non-Extreme offers a better overall value.
This handheld has now become even better. BestBuy has discounted the entry-level model to just $299, making the price just as low as the vanilla Nintendo Switch.
The Ryzen Z1 non-Extreme APU-equipped ROG Ally was first available for $599. However, ASUS swiftly changed the pricing since they felt the price was not justified considering the performance difference compared to the Ryzen Z1 Extreme model.
In terms of specs, the Ryzen Z1 has two fewer cores (6 vs. 8 cores) and is based on the Zen4 and Zen4c architectures. Furthermore, its GPU configuration is also far less capable than that of the Ryzen Z1 Extreme.
The GPU on the Z1 non-Extreme features only 4 compute units running at 200 MHz, compared to the Z1 Extreme’s 12 RDNA 3 compute units. However, for $300, this handheld will deliver a respectable gaming experience.
It now costs just as much as Nintendo’s hardware, which has sold nearly 140 million units. The price is down by 40%, so it is certainly tempting, even if the Z1 Extreme variant is more to most peoples’ liking.
Meanwhile, options like the Steam Deck OLED remain impressive. The handheld gaming market is in a strong place right now. All types of price points have something to offer, with the Nintendo Switch Lite on sale for as low as $200.
For the price point, there is no going wrong. While the Asus ROG Ally non-Extreme might not have been a desirable product last year, the new discounted price of just $300 puts it above its competitors, making it a no-brainer for anyone who wants to invest in a brand-new handheld gaming device.
