Rise of The Ronin Review Roundup – Fails to Deliver The Hype

76/100 on Metacritic Despite Months of Hype!

Story Highlights
  • Rise of The Ronin delivers a mediocre experience and fails to stand out.
  • The combat and co-op are fun, but the overall experience isn’t that noteworthy.
  • Following over 50 reviews, the game has landed at 76/100 on Metacritic.

Rise of The Ronin reviews have just been released. Following controversies about the visuals, frame rate, and more, the reviews highlight a disappointing picture.

The game was hyped up as an epic adventure taking inspiration from Ghost of Tsushima. However, the initial reviews are not the best, putting the game at an average of 76/100 on Metacritic.

Why it matters: Team Ninja partnering with Sony for an exclusive title was a prospect many were interested in. Sadly, the title is more or less the same open-world RPGs that we often see.

A few of the reviews can be seen below.

  • PlayStation Universe – 9.5/10
  • Screen Rant – 9/10
  • Twinfinite – 9/10
  • Noisy Pixel – 8/10
  • IGN – 7/10
  • Carole Quintaine – 7.5/10
  • Push Square – 6/10
  • VGC – 6/10

Combat is quite impressive, but that’s true of every Team Ninja game.

There are various fighting styles, with each enemy offering unique strengths and weaknesses. Adaptability is also a major part of the combat and proves to be a fun addition.

Another impressive part is the co-op. However, this element is rather limited, and in most missions, you can’t tell if co-op is available.

But this is where the fun part ends.

Rise of the Ronin is Team Ninja’s first fully open-world game, and no, it doesn’t seem the best of ideas. To deliver a complete open-world, uninteresting side content has been added that makes the game seem outdated.

Modern games require very different elements to remain interesting. Recent releases like Elden Ring have raised the bar, so a return to the old and stale formula has not been taken kindly by audiences.

The game also suffers from an identity problem as it struggles between balancing the Souls-like and RPG elements. The graphics are another obvious weakness. Rise of the Ronin falls short of expectations, and performance issues make the matter even worse.

This, combined with the bland open-world design, has landed the game well below expectations. While the general reviews are mixed, the game is still far from bad.

Its biggest weakness is the lack of anything that makes it stand out, so reviewers have scored Rise of the Ronin accordingly. Following these reviews, Team Ninja’s 5 million sales target is looking a bit far-fetched.
