Metro Developer 4A Games No Longer With Embracer Group

Good Step For Future Metro Games?

Story Highlight
  • Embracer Group has officially sold Saber Interactive for $247 million.
  • However, it has been reported that the developers are taking 4A Games, the team behind Metro, with them.
  • An official confirmation on the latter is yet to be made.

Embracer Group’s restructuring plan has sacrificed many developers. Over 900 developers have already been laid off, and around 29 games have been scrapped during the last six months.

Embracer Group has now sold Saber Interactive, which is currently said to be working on the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake, for $247 million. However, a reliable leaker states this transaction has also led to 4A Games’ departure from Embracer Group.

Why it matters: The Metro series is set to receive a new entry this year, with the next game also being in development.

The official news from Embracer Group says they can still retain Metro developer 4A Games and Zen Studios.

However, according to reliable reports from Bloomberg, an internal Saber Interactive email confirms that they are taking 4A Games and Zen Studio with them. This brings the transaction’s cost to around $500 million.

Still, it should be noted that Embracer Group will retain the rights to the 4A Games’ back catalog. This also means that the upcoming games from the studios, including the Metro franchise, will stay with the publisher.

Embrace Group first bought Saber Interactive during its acquisition spree four years ago for $150 million. The developer was recently tasked with working on Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake, in addition to titles like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

The co-founder of Saber Interactive and Beacon, Matthew Karch, has stated they it will continue working with Embracer Group.

Therefore, this seems to be a win-win transaction for developers like Saber Interactive and 4A Games since it frees them of a potential closure at the hands of Embracer Group.

Embracer Group has been relentless in its restructuring approach, shutting down studios left and right. Many also believed this plan had led to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake being canceled.

Recept reports confirm that this is not the case. Therefore, this transaction should help 4A Games and Saber Interactive stay afloat, with the studios promising more quality games moving forward.
