Entire Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy Is Exclusive To PlayStation

Trilogy Might Never Come To Xbox!

Story Highlight
  • Securing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth as an exclusive strengthens the PlayStation brand and fills a gap in its 2024 lineup.
  • PlayStation has secured exclusivity for the entire trilogy, and this decision was agreed upon by both parties before Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
  • Similar to the previous game, a PC version of Rebirth will likely launch in early 2025.

Update:

Following this interview, it was clarified that Square Enix and PlayStation have not confirmed exclusivity for the third game. However, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth will remain console exclusives for PlayStation.

Original Story:

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been a huge success with its immersive fantasy universe, created exclusively for the PS5. Series producer Yoshinori Kitase highlights that the exclusivity approach allowed the team to build a rich and detailed world without the limitations of developing for multiple platforms.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Christian Svensson confirmed the PS5 exclusivity of the whole Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

Why it matters: During the interview, Kitase stressed that Rebirth’s game design would have regressed had it not been exclusive to the PlayStation 5. With the same exclusivity approach, part 3 in the trilogy is also set to be a PS5/PS6 exclusive.

Kitase highlighted that focusing solely on the PlayStation 5 enabled the creation of a seamless world map without loading screens featuring diverse geography.

This choice improved the player experience and simplified the game’s development, allowing the team to focus on refining the game’s design rather than dealing with porting tasks for various platforms.

Securing the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy as a PlayStation exclusive is a major win for Sony. According to Christian Svensson, vice president of third-party content ventures at Sony Entertainment, it underscores the historical significance of the original game and its contribution to shaping the PlayStation experience.

Svensson recognizes the significance of teaming up with third-party partners, which played a vital role in the success of the original PlayStation. He explains that this emphasis on working with external developers directly relates to their collaboration on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

The exclusivity connects directly to how we’ve worked together on FF7 Rebirth.

Additionally, he stresses that making the game PlayStation exclusive was a joint decision from the start of the ‘Remake’ project.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Might Never Arrive on Nintendo or Xbox Hardware

This exclusivity is significant, especially since Sony doesn’t have any major first-party titles planned for the PlayStation 5 in 2024.

Final Fantasy has always been one of the flagship series for PlayStation, and Svensson praised Square Enix for continually pushing boundaries and demonstrating the capabilities of PlayStation hardware.

The exclusivity agreement ensures that the trilogy stays on PlayStation consoles for a while. However, the exact timeframe hasn’t been revealed yet.

On the other hand, PC gamers should anticipate a release of Rebirth similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. This enhanced version came to PC six months after its PlayStation 5 debut.

Since another PlayStation exclusive from 2023, Final Fantasy 16, is coming to PC, there’s a possibility we’ll see  Rebirth on PC in early 2025. In general, collaborating on the trilogy has been a success story for both Sony and Square Enix.

Sony gains a highly praised trilogy that strengthens the PlayStation 5’s lineup, while Square Enix provides a fresh take on a beloved classic that has captured the hearts of a new generation of players.
