As reported by Bloomberg, Embracer Group, who acquired the Deus Ex franchise in 2022, is canceling a game that has been in development for over two years.
Following the cancellation, many developers will be laid off from the studio as part of their ongoing initiative. This report comes from anonymous people not authorized to talk to the press. It further states:
“The canceled Deus Ex project,which had not yet been announced, was slated to enter production later this year.”
Though the reason for canceling the project remains unknown, it’s likely because of the initiative to cut costs.
Embracer Group has recently laid off nearly 1000 developers as part of these measures. The publisher also shut down Volition Games, focusing on more guaranteed successes moving forward.
Recently, it was reported that the developers were working on a Deus Ex remake, which was being developed on Unreal Engine 5. However, the validity of this rumor is even more questionable after the latest report.
We still hope to see the IP coming back one or another eventually. The series is one of the most unique in the gaming industry and certainly deserves another chance.
