Samsung is scheduled to showcase two variants of its upcoming GDDR7 graphics memory technology to other manufacturers at ISSCC 2024 on February 20, 2024.
The International Solid-State Circuit Conference, or ISSCC for short, is a global platform where manufacturers and other industry participants showcase the most recent advancements in solid-state circuits, including new versions of DRAM and VRAM.
It should come as no surprise that Samsung will be showcasing GDDR7 at ISSCC. GDDR7 was supposed to be released shortly, according to announcements made by Micron and Samsung last year.
As reported by TechRadar, Samsung’s new GDDR7 memory operates at speeds of 37Gbps, which is more than 54% faster than the company’s fastest GDDR6 memory(24 Gbps). The 20Gbps GDDR6 memory on AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX is currently the fastest GDDR6 memory found in a GPU.
The RAM on AMD’s flagship RDNA 3 GPU is 85% slower than Samsung’s 37Gbps GDDR7 memory. The GPU market could be completely changed by Samsung’s upcoming GDDR7 memory modules.
Samsung’s new GDDR7 memory modules may provide more than 1.75Tbps(terabytes per second) of memory bandwidth by using the same 384-bit memory buses as GPUs like Nvidia’s RTX 4090 or AMD’s RX 7900 XTX.
Giving users greater bandwidth, GDDR7 will contribute to the powering of the upcoming generation of workstations, graphics cards, and consoles. Furthermore, compared to the current generation of GDDR6/GDDR6X memory modules, these new GDDR7 modules use less energy.
Samsung has also changed the epoxy molding compound(EMC) used in their GDDR7 modules. Because of its increased thermal conductivity, the compound may transmit heat from DRAM chips to the heatsink solution more effectively.
Due to this modification, GDDR7 has a 70% lower thermal resistance than GDDR6, which makes it simple to efficiently cool GDDR6 memory. It will be fascinating to see if the GDDR7 memory that Samsung is giving can be matched or even beaten by its rivals, including Micron and many others that are soon to join the race.
