Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake Has Begun Development At Ubisoft

In The Works Since Last Year!

Story Highlights
  • Last year, a report claimed Ubisoft planned to remake Assassin’s Creed 4.
  • According to a LinkedIn profile, the remake’s development began last year.
  • Ubisoft has yet to officially announce the remake.

Reports of an Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake surfaced back in June 2023. While there has been no official word from Ubisoft since then, a new update on LinkedIn hints that the remake already began development in September 2023.

Why it matters: Assassin’s Creed 4 is undeniably amongst the most popular games Ubisoft has ever produced. It garnered attention from all types of players, introducing many to the series for the first time and surpassing 34 million players last year.

Last year’s report stated that the project would be led by a team at Ubisoft Singapore. According to a developer from this studio, an unannounced Assassin’s Creed project began development in September 2023.

This timeline lines up with the initial report, with development supposedly starting a few months after Ubisoft began to consider this project. Putting two and two together, this unannounced project appears to be the Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake leaked last year.

Ubisoft has recently greenlit various remakes. Splinter Cell is getting a new version with story changes, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake is progressing well, and a third AAA remake was added to the list last year.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag Remake

However, with Assassin’s Creed 4 being the most recent remake on Ubisoft’s plate, it will likely require several more years of development. Till then, fans can anticipate Assassin’s Creed Red, Ubisoft’s biggest investment and blockbuster for 2024.

Assassin’s Creed 4, while still a beloved title, has a few quirks that can be ironed out in the remake. The game was notoriously inconsistent at release, with elements like parkour being quite buggy.

However, these flaws were easy to gloss over when the overall package was so compelling. Edward Kenway’s narrative, the naval combat, and the sense of exploration were portrayed masterfully in this title, and we hope to see these strengths improved further in the remake.
