- There has always been stiff competition between PCs and consoles.
- PC seems to have dominated the competition in 2023, as it emerged as the most-played platform of the year.
- Nintendo Switch came in second place, and PlayStation 4 was third.
The rivalry between PlayStation and Xbox has made many forget that the PC platform had its own rivalry against consoles. While consoles are as appealing as ever, PCs are more popular than before in 2023.
Though games are mainly built and optimized for consoles today, the PC platform appears to be thriving. Despite numerous poor releases, a report states that PC was the most-played platform in 2023.
Why it matters: 2023 was dominated by high graphics card prices in the PC market. This led many to believe that PC gaming would become unpopular, but this report suggests otherwise.

HowLongToBeat shows that PC is the most-played platform in 2023, ahead of Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. While Sony believes the PS5 has several advantages over PC due to ease of use, players appear more comfortable with the latter.
PC offers the benefit of free online gaming, mods, high refresh rates, and more. The platform also extends to a wide range of users, ranging from budget to high-end setups, increasing the number of users.
Interestingly, the report puts Xbox in a tough spot. Shockingly, the Xbox Series S|X are below the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One. While Microsoft is struggling with console sales in 2023, this does sound a bit far-fetched.
Still, a large chunk of Microsoft’s gaming share could also be coming from PCs. With day-one first-party titles and Xbox Game Pass, PC gaming and Xbox go hand-in-hand.
Emulation is another strong suit of the platform. Emulators like PCSX2 are now capable of running 99% of PS2 titles. As most consoles lack extensive backward compatibility, players tend to move toward PC for the nostalgia of old classics.
Despite having the top spot on the list, the PC platform is not without its disadvantages.
Games like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 were not released on the platform at launch. The same will happen for GTA 6, as the game will not be available on PC on day one. This has already upset fans, but it was inevitable.
We think PC gaming is in a good spot. The interest is at an all-time high, but recent graphics card prices may end up hurting this industry in the future.
With companies like Nvidia seemingly dubbing themselves AI businesses and releasing products with obnoxious value propositions, the newfound interest in the market might not be sustainable unless there is a drastic shift in the current approach.
