The Witcher 4: CDPR Wants To Break RPG Boundaries Again

Wants To Surpass Witcher 3 In Every Way!

Story Highlights
  • The Witcher 4 is currently in active development, with nearly 50% of CDPR staff busy in the project.
  • The developers want to build something that sets a new bar for the RPG genre, much like The Witcher 3.
  • The Witcher 4 will be open to new players since the team expects to build a new community around this game.

The Witcher 3 has been CDPR’s magnum opus for many years. Eight years later, the game is still the standard for modern RPGs and has sold over 50 million units. However, the studio is now looking to outdo itself with The Witcher 4.

While the next mainline Witcher game is still a few years away, the developer has already set high goals for itself, hoping to break the boundaries of RPGs.

Why it matters: The studio used to be a niche developer before The Witcher 3, but there are now millions of eyes on this team and its upcoming games, encouraging the studio to work harder than before.

Skellige Witcher 3

During a recent interview with Leganerd, Sebastian Kalemba discussed the next Witcher game. The developer was a part of The Witcher 3 and hopes to bring his expertise to take The Witcher 4 to new heights.

While discussing RPG elements, the developer said:

“The idea is to build something that surpasses The Witcher 3, telling a more intense story and crafting a more intense gameplay.”

When asked about the entry of new players into the franchise through The Witcher 4, the developer commented that CDPR hopes to build a new community.

Therefore, The Witcher 4 will be very welcoming to new players. Still, returning players will likely find references and story beats that cater to their knowledge, making the experience rewarding for both types of fans.

The Witcher 4

Recently, it was also confirmed that over 50% of CDPR is now working on this game.

The Witcher 4 marks a new age for CDPR. This game is being developed on Unreal Engine 5, and the studio has successfully redeemed Cyberpunk 2077 recently. Therefore, the developers are likely to be more confident than before, leading to a more ambitious project.

Following this statement, expectations have risen to a new level. The Witcher 4 was always expected to be something special, but CDPR could be preparing to change the RPG genre in a few years.
